A striking vintage Māori carved wood wall panel, dating from around the 1960s and depicting a stylised Tiki figure.

The panel has been hand-carved with strong, graphic facial features and traditional Māori-inspired decorative detailing. The sculptural relief and rich natural wood grain give it plenty of character, while the relatively flat panel form makes it particularly easy to display as a piece of wall art.

New Zealand Māori wood carving experienced a significant revival during the 20th century, particularly from the 1920s onwards, and carved panels and figures continued to be produced for both cultural and decorative contexts. Examples of Māori carving from the 1960s are represented in the collections of Te Papa Tongarewa, including carved wooden figures dating to this period.
