A beautiful early 20th-century Inuit qulliq, or kudlik, traditionally carved from soapstone and used as an oil lamp by the Arctic circumpolar peoples.
 
The simple, organic form and hand-carved surface are characteristic of traditional Inuit soapstone work. Qulliqs were traditionally fuelled with rendered animal fat such as seal or whale blubber and used as an important source of heat and light, as well as for cooking and drying clothing.
 
A wonderful example of traditional Inuit craftsmanship, with a naturally aged surface and beautiful tactile character. Equally interesting as a historic object or displayed as a sculptural piece.
