A wonderful 18th-century antique pewter charger, acquired in Belgium, featuring an unusual octagonal form, a raised beaded border and delicate decorative detailing to the rim.
Substantial in weight, the plate has a beautifully aged surface with deep, dark patina and the honest irregularities of traditional hand-crafted metalwork. The reverse displays a distinctive rough, textured finish with a visible casting mark, while faint hand-worked zigzag decoration and small punch motifs add further detail around the rim.
With its understated folk-art character and robust, utilitarian form, this is a lovely example of early European pewterware. An evocative piece of antique tableware with plenty of presence, equally suited to display on a dresser, layered into a collection of antique objects or used as a decorative centrepiece.
